AGM

A small number of members came together at the Wenlock Arms in London on the 3rd April for our much postponed AGM. A full report will be available with the July printed newsletter which will be posted to all members.

Amongst the many items under discussion was the idea of a 'Pub History Day School'. We've attempted this in the past without success but we'll have another go at something similar sometime in September - probably in London. Watch this space.

Ancient Order of Froth Blowers

I have had numerous queries relating to the Ancient Order of Froth Blowers over the last year or so and I thought it only right and proper that we set up a website to deal with them.

If any of you have any experience, memories or information relating to this social phenomena of the 1920's I'd love to hear from you. You can visit the website via the Pub History Society webpage or you can go direct at www.pubhistory.freeserve.co.uk/phs/aofb/index.htm

Please feel free to leave comments on the guestbook.

A useful resource

www.RootsChat.com - online forum for Local History and Family History for the United Kingdom and Ireland. Divided up into each county. Might be useful to you.

Some queries

I am enjoying your webpage from the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC, where I am working on the trial of Giles Mompesson.
I would be most grateful for any information anyone might have on Mompesson's career up to 1620.

Many thanks in advance, Michael Harrawood

[Ed - As many of you will know Giles Mompesson was responsible for issuing Inn Licenses in the 17th century usually for bribes and back handers]

Hotel and Tavern Keepers' Provident Institution

I'm particularly interested in this Institution because a relative, Mr PAGLIANO, was described in a note in the Times (
27 Sept 1841) as a steward at the 3rd annual dinner. He also took the chair at a meeting concerning the formation of an association for the detection of offenders and the recovery of stolen property, reported in the Times on 11 Dec 1835; possibly the meeting led to the formation of the Institution. Father and son, John and Charles PAGLIANO, kept the Sabloniere Hotel in Leicester sq from about 1814 until 1845, also other hotels in the Leicester sq area from about 1802.

I would be particularly interested in any annual reports or other records that might exist, are you aware of anything?

Many thanks

Missing Person at Ye Old Leathern Bottle.

Is anyone familiar with the above pub in Barkham Road, Wokingham, Berkshire.

I am trying to trace my brother  who was the publican. This was his last known address about 1974.  His other half was called Freda.

Any help would be appreciated.

Five Bells, Colne Engaine, Essex

Hi, My ancestors were Victuallers at the Five Bells, Colne Engaine, Essex. I have found landlords listed from the early 1800's.

Is there a way I can find out the same information about pubs in Billericay in the early to mid 1940's?. Any help appreciated.

Ship Tavern in Canute Street, Southampton

I am trying to find information about the Ship Tavern in Canute Street, Southampton. Probably open in the the late 19th early 20th century. On the wall of the building is still written LONDON & DUBLIN STOUT HOUSE It is no longer a pub although we plan to turn it back to a pub/cafe/restaurant - opening September 2004.

We do have an old photo of the building.

Any information or directions to find information would be most welcome.

Kind regards Jenny Fox-Johnson
